The plot revolves around Tom, a dreamer who unlike his wife Abbie, an ambitious, methodical and career-minded young woman, is unimpressed by Tom’s lack of ambition and appreciation for the material things of life. This creates conflicts in the marriage, which come to a head when the couple invite their neighbours Simon and Laura around for drinks. It soon becomes apparent that Tom is attracted to Laura, a graphic designer and kindred spirit, while Abbie is similarly attracted to Simon, a wine buff like herself and an ambitious accountant who is all for moving up in the world. If only Tom could go back in time and change things...

A relaxing holiday is all that Jean, Barbara and Olive had expected when they visited Burgh Island off the South Devon coast, in the summer of 1936. Attractive, affluent, but, for one reason or another (divorce, widowhood, spinsterhood) without male companions, they nevertheless hope for some excitement in their otherwise restricted social lives. It is Barbara who first spots the mysterious Woman who wants to remain incognito, and Jean who overhears “Mrs Chisholm” plotting a murder. Putting two and two together, and making five, the ladies do, however, uncover a celebrity, or maybe two.
