The Owl and the Pussycat Went to See... - Review

Review by Theo Spring - December 1993

What nonsense! Well, what else would you expect from an amalgamation of the characters from Edward Lear’s Nonsense Songs written in 1871?

There are some very imaginative sets, by Iris Crampton, at Warlingham Church Hall, particularly the sea and peagreen boat upon which the curtain rises and the clever bong trees, which really grow.

They are joined by make-up par excellence by Val Seigne. Her pussycat and owl faces were superb.

Owl and Puss set off in search of a ring and a vicar, enlisting the help of Quangle Wangle (Wendy Brown) who takes charge of the pair and helps them in their quest.

The goodies who accompany them include Dong with the (very clever) Luminous Nose (Tim Haggis) and the Runcible Spoon (Liz Haskins).

The baddie is the Plum Pudding Flea (Mark Coram) who bounced menacingly around the stage.

Out of a crowded cast I must commend Pauline Martin’s French-accented Pig and the Sun who smiled all through the play.
